Exploring Your Procrastinator
The Procrastinator is engaged by
some perceived pressure or expectation. It
has the capacity to divert our attention from
what's at hand to something else entirely.
This Self is exceptionally gifted at
stalling, delaying, or postponing the
inevitable, with the ultimate motivation of
protecting us.
The Procrastinator
often focuses on the "little things" as
opposed to
the larger projects. These
distractions are usually things such as
cleaning out a desk drawer, calling a friend,
playing with the dog, etc. This Self allows
us to be in the moment, inspired by the
experience of instant gratification.
The Procrastinator can give us
the opportunity to slow down and shift our
focus. This Head Centered Self supports us
to take a pause in order to see what is
actually pressuring us. In shifting our
attention elsewhere, this Self often helps to
reveal if there is an underlying expectation.
What are the Expressions of Your
Procrastinator?
IDENTIFYING A PRIMARY/DOMINANT
PROCRASTINATOR:
If you are over identified with your
Procrastinator, you may find yourself
avoiding doing things that need to be done.
Over time, this can create feelings of
agitation and stress by putting off for
tomorrow what needs to be done today.
RECOGNIZING AN UNTAPPED
PROCRASTINATOR:
When your Procrastinator has been disowned or
repressed you can find yourself pushing
projects or tasks to completion prematurely.
Without the lens of this self you can miss
the opportunities to slow down and consider a
change of course.
EXPLORING AND HONORING POSSIBLE
OPPOSITES OF THE PROCRASTINATOR:
Whether your Procrastinator is dominant or
untapped it has a corresponding opposite Self
that brings the potential for balance. Where
is your Procrastinator on the spectrum from
dominant to untapped? If your Procrastinator
is dominant who is the opposite Self that is
being repressed or disowned? If your
Procrastinator is repressed or disowned who
is the opposite Self that is dominant?
Potential opposites for this Self, such as the
Accommodator, the Risk Taker and the
Entrepreneur can be found in the Heart,
Belly and Spirit Centers.
CREATING BALANCE WITH THE PROCRASTINATOR
AND ITS
OPPOSITE:
Making a healthy connection with the
Procrastinator and it's opposite Self can
support you in integrating the qualities and
characteristics of each Self. With an
integrated Procrastinator you can experience
a reprieve from expectations and
responsibilities, remaining steadfast in
relation to your overall goals and deadlines.
This balance helps you to do what you have
to do without overriding your immediate
needs. Being aware of your Procrastinator and
its opposite supports you in making more
conscious choices.
DEEPENING THE DIALOGUE WITH YOUR
PROCRASTINATOR:
- What is the earliest memory you have of
your Procrastinator?
- How is your Procrastinator expressing
itself by
showing up at this time?
- Can you define the unique qualities that
your Procrastinator expresses?
